The UPLB Chemical Engineering Department

Birth of the Department

The Department of Chemical Engineering already existed with the transfer of the Sugar Technology program under the College of Engineering and Agro-Industrial Technology, during the college’s foundation on February 24, 1983. On the other hand, the Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering curriculum was instituted upon approval by the UP Board of Regents on March 7, 1985. The program was the brainchild of then UPLB Chancellor Dr. Emil Q. Javier, also former UP System President.

Department Chairpersons

Since it’s creation, the Department has had six chairpersons, namely:
  • Dr. Ernesto P. Lozada (1983 – 1984)
  • Dr. Casiano S. Abrigo, Jr. (1984 – 1991)
  • Dr. Reynaldo I. Acda (1991 – 1997)
  • Prof. Rex B. Demafelis (1997 – 2003)
  • Prof. Myra G. Borines (2003 – 2005)
  • Prof. Rex B. Demafelis (2005 – 2008)
  • Dr. Jovita L. Movillon (2008 – Present)
Academic Excellence

The Department has always been able to make a name in chemical engineering education. UPLB Chemical Engineering graduates have consistently obtained high passing percentages in the chemical engineering licensure examination, with many exam topnotchers including first-placers, thus making UPLB one of the top-performing schools of chemical engineering in the country. Distinct and reputable awards and recognition have also been achieved by a number of faculty and staff members as well as students and alumni.

Our Legacy

Through its existence, the Department has produced top-caliber graduates who are gainfully employed, and many are occupying top positions in the industry and other related fields. Numerous technological researches have also been conducted, many of which are published in local and international refereed journals. Dynamic linkages/partnerships with industries, local and international academic institutions and other relevant professional organizations have also been established and integrated in the academic network of the Department.

THE FIELD OF CHEMICAL ENGINEERING

Chemical engineers study and develop processes and technologies from piloting to commercial-scale processing of specific raw materials to marketable products in the most economical, efficient and environment-friendly operation.

This broad discipline of chemical engineering gives its graduates opportunities to work with various industries such as biochemical agents, computer systems and process control, environmental management, petro-chemicals, petroleum engineering, pharmaceuticals, superconductivity, sugar products and byproducts, pulp and paper products, and synthetics.

Aside from the fields of industry, careers in the academe and in research also exist. Higher education in chemical engineering, i.e. graduate and doctoral degrees, is offered in universities, locally and internationally.

CHEMICAL ENGINEERING @ UPLB

Graduates of the BS Chemical Engineering Curriculum are expected to meet technical manpower requirements of newly emerging agri-based industries and traditional chemical process industries, specifically in the area of bio-processing engineering and chemical process engineering. Chemical engineers with some understanding of bio-processing are needed to scale up production from laboratory to bench levels into the industrial level. In the long run, local processing of raw materials into consumer and industrial products should help raise rural income, generate foreign exchange and protect the Philippine economy from adverse external trade conditions.
